(1) 비교급의 용법

 

 

1. Tom is cleverer than Mary.

 

2. Tom is the cleverer of the two

 

3. Jack is two years older than you.

 

 

1) 위 예문 2와 같이 of the two 가 뒤따를 경우 비교급에도 the를 붙인다.

 

 

2) 비교급을 강조하거나 비교급의 정도를 나타내는 경우에는 much, a little, still, even, far, by far, a lot 등을 비교급 앞에 둔다

 

1. He got up a little earlier than usual.

 

2. He is much taller than you.

 

3. He is two inches taller than you.

 

= He is taller than you by two inches.

 

 

3) 동일 인물의 다른 성질을 비교할 때

 

He is more kind than generous. (kinder 아님)

 

4) 비교급 관용구

 

1. More often than not, a slight disease turns into fatal. (종종)

 

2. We were more than pleased with the news.

 

(우리는 그 소식에 더할 나위 없이 기뻤다.)

 

3. She knows better than to do such a thing.

 

= She is not so foolish as to do such a thing.

 

4. She will get (have) the better of you in an argument.(승리하다)

 

5. You would sooner (rather) die than betray you country.

 

= You would as soon die as betray your country.

 

((너는) 너의 나라를 배반하느니 차라리 죽는 게 낫겠다.)

 

 

 

5) 라틴계동의 형용사 비교급에는 than 대신 to를 사용하고 비교급으로 만 사용된다.

 

senior, junior, superior, inferior 등

 

1. A is superior to B = A is better than B

 

2. His work is inferior (superior) to mine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

(2)최상급의 용법

 

1. Iron is the most useful of all metals.

 

2. Iron is one of the most useful metals.

 

 

1) 최상급 앞에는 the 가 붙는다.  of (또는 among) 는 &qout;&qout;~가운데서&qout;&qout;의 뜻이며, 그 뒤에는 복수명사가 온다.

 

in 다음에는 장소나 집단이 온다.

 

 

1. He is the most honest of all (among) the pupils.

 

2. The river is the longest in Korea.

 

3. He is the tallest of all in the class.

 

 

 

2) 최상급이라도 다음과 같은 경우 관사가 붙지 않는다.

 

1. This river is deepest here. (형용사로 쓰인 경우 - 동일 사물 비교)

 

2. I like spring best of all the seasons. (부사로 쓰인 경우)

 

 

3. 원급 - 비교급 - 최상급을 이용한 최상급 표현

 

1. Tom is the tallest boy in his class.

 

2. No other boy is his class in taller than Tom.

 

3. No other boy is his class is so tall as Tom.

 

4. Tom is taller than any other boy in his class.

 

5. Tom is taller than all the other boys in his class.

 

 

 

 

3) 최상급구문

 

1. This is a most interesting book. (a most=very+원급)

 

2. This is the most interesting book of all. (최상급)

 

3. Most students dislike doing homework. (대부분=almost all)

 

4. She is most kind. (형용사 서술용법 최상급)

 

(She is the kindest of these girls.)

 

5. This is the best dinner. (절대 최상급=very+원급)

(This is a very good dinner.)

 

6. 최상급을 강조하는 말, much the best, by far the best, the very best 따위.

 

7. The Amazon is the second longest river in the world.
