* to take up : (특히 이미 끝난 데서 시작하여) 계속하다, (시간·공간을) 차지하다[쓰다]
ex) I'm going to take up sailing. I would have taken it up when I was younger, but I didn't have the money.
- 나는 항해를 계속 할 것입니다. 내가 어렸을 때 계속 하려고 했지만 돈이 없었습니다.
ex) The piano takes up too much space in our living room. However, it would take too much time to move it right now; so we'd better wait until later.
- 피아노는 우리집 거실에서 너무 많은 자리를 차지합니다. 그러나 지금 그걸 옮기는데엔 시간이 많이 걸려서 나중에 하는게 좋을 것 같습니다.
* to take up with : ~에게 ~에 대해 이야기를 하다, …와 어울리다
ex) Can I take the problem up with you right now? It's quit urgent.
- 지금 당신에게 그 문제에 대해 얘기해도 될까요? 꽤 시급한 문제거든요.
ex) I can't help you with this matter. You'll have to take it up with the manager.
- 나는 이 문제에 관해서 당신을 도울 수 없습니다. 당신은 매니져와 논의해야 할 것입니다.
* to take after : ~를 닮다(특히 부모를 닮은 경우에 씀)
ex) Which of your parents do you take after the most?
- 당신은 어디가 가장 부모님을 닮았나요?
ex) Sam looks like his father, but he takes after his mother in personality.
- 샘은 그의 아버지처럼 보입니다. 그러나 성향은 그의 어머니를 닮았습니다.
* in the long run : (앞으로 길게 보았을 때) 결국에는
ex) In the long run, the synthetic weave in this carpet will wear better than the woolen one. You won't have to replace it so soon.
- 길게 보면, 이 합성직물 카페트는 양모로 된 것보다 더 쓰기 좋을 것입니다. 금방 교체하지 않아도 되거든요.
ex) If you work hard at your marriage, you'll find out that, in the long run, your spouse can be your best friend in life.
- 만약 당신이 결혼생활을 열심히 한다면 결국 당신의 배우자가 인생의 가장 좋은 최고의 친구라는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.
* in touch : (~와 편지·전화로) 연락하고 지내다[연락하다]
ex) I haven't been in touch with Sabrina since her baby was born. I should get in touch with her soon.
- 나는 사브리나가 아기를 낳은 뒤로 연락한 적이 없습니다. 곧 연락해 보는 것이 좋겠네요.
